Creating a new and unique look in your kitchen doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult with the right choice of cabinet door hardware. You can easily give your cabinet doors a distinctive appearance without spending your entire budget for redecorating.
What to Look for and Where
Many of the larger craft stores will have what you will need. Look for metal or durable plastic pieces that will match the color and look of your kitchen. For instance, you might look for a metal alphabet piece for the family’s last name. Small figurines also work well for this type of look. You might look for colorful pieces, or pieces that have some special meaning for the family.
You will also need some flat or smooth headed plain knobs or handles. Before you go shopping check out the size of your existing cabinet door hardware. If you get knobs or handles that are a bit bigger, this shouldn’t be a problem, but you don’t want to get any that are smaller than what you already have, unless you plan to replace the entire cabinet door.
What You will Need
■Metal pieces or plastic pieces
■Plain cabinet door handles or knobs with flat heads
■Glue gun
■Quick Drying Glue
■Screw driver
■Screws
■Drill
■Hammer
Step 1 - Glue the Covers
Once you have decided on the look you want for your new look take the plain flat headed cabinet doorknobs or handles and fit the new pieces on top of them in the manner you feel looks best. Using the glue gun and the glue you have chosen fix the new plastic or metal pieces to the knobs or handles. Give these a chance to dry.
Step 2 - Remove and Replace
Once these have dried using the screw driver remove the old knobs. If the new knobs are a bit bigger then carefully measure to see which drill head to use and drill the holes larger and then fit the new knobs to the door. Usually the new knobs will come with the washers or screws needed for the task, but if not and if the old hardware will not work for the new knobs then another quick trip to the hardware store is needed. Should this be the case, take one of the new knobs with you to measure the size of the hardware needed. After screwing the knobs or handles in place wipe the doors down to clear them of any smudges.
Step 3 - Hinges
If there is money left in your budget this might be a good time to replace the hinges to match the new hardware. If not then use the screw driver to tighten the hinge screws, or tap them the gently with the hammer to eliminate any slack or squeaks.
Just showing a little creativity with the cabinet hardware can give the entire kitchen a new appearance and revitalized feel.
