When installing kitchen cabinets, you want the units to be level, flush and stable. The tips below will help you accomplish this, especially if you have the assistance of another person.
Keeping the Units Flush
One of the most common difficulties involved in installing kitchen cabinets is securing them flush to the wall. There should be no gaps when installing the cabinets to the wall studs. Take the time to measure and mark the wall studs and to create a plum line with a chalk string or level to make sure that it is level throughout the installation.
Installing a temporary support stud will help take some of the load off your helper as you set the upper unit in place. It will also help keep the cabinet flush and level to the wall.
Lifting the Upper Cabinets
Another tricky step is connecting the upper units prior to hoisting them into place. End units, particularly those that curve, may not attach flush, which may cause them to wobble and come loose prior to being secured to the wall studs. To alleviate this problem, use loose boards to join the corner or end pieces. This should reduce the wobbling and make the cabinet end more stable prior to being secured to the wall.
Maintaining the Cabinet’s Level
You need to make sure that the cabinet pieces remain level throughout the entire installation process. If the pieces become uneven or break away, it will create problems with the installation of the counter top and may contribute to the cabinets giving way at some point. Use shims and a level when different cabinet unit pieces are joined. Also check the level of the cabinet units prior to securing with screws as well as afterwards. Use shims to maintain the level and you should be okay when you secure the cabinet to the wall studs.
Other Concerns
There are other concerns that may arise during the installation of the kitchen cabinets. Many of these concerns and issues can be eliminated through careful attention to detail and working carefully and meticulously. You should always secure the cabinet units with screws not nails. Nails will not hold the unit in place over time and eventually the cabinets will separate from the wall. Screws grip the wood studs better and have superior holding ability over time.
If you encounter an alignment issue or are unable to resolve an installation issue, either take the cabinets apart and start again or call for a more experienced helper. If you take your time during the installation and are mindful of keeping the assembly level and flush with the wall, your problems should be minimal. Never force the cabinet units in a space; it is important that your measurements are accurate and precise and that you have a way to compensate for any mistakes that may have occurred in any of your calculations.

Choosing Wood For Custom Kitchen Cabinets
While selecting the wood for your custom kitchen cabinet system you will want to consider the look of different types of wood as well as how well they will stand up to daily use over time. Both hardwoods such as maple and oak and softwoods like pine are proven workhorses in a kitchen setting.
Pine
Pine is a soft wood that thrives in different parts of the world. The type found in the United States is Eastern White Pine. Although the name says Eastern White, the wood is a yellow color with attractive brown knots. It is widely used in kitchen cabinets and is an excellent wood for staining because of its grainy quality.
Maple and Oak
Maple and oak are hardwood that are popular choices as well. Maple is a light-colored wood and has an even grain texture while oak has an open grain and is reddish in color. Both of these woods are very durable and accept stain well.
Cherry
Cherry wood is also reddish brown like oak to a deep red color. Cherry wood is considered a higher-end wood and has the price tag to prove it. Cherry is quite beautiful when incorporated into cabinetry and furniture pieces.
While cost is certainly a consideration when choosing a wood type for your custom kitchen cabinets, remember that the more durable the wood, the longer you should expect it to last.

Cabinet Door Hinges: A Placement Guide
Cabinet door hinges come in a wide variety of different shapes, sizes, and types. Some cabinet door hinges are spring loaded, while others are inset into the door. They can be plastic, wood, metal and even ceramic. No matter what type you have, you will have to find out where to actually attach them on your cabinet door. Here is a quick placement guide for cabinet door hinges.
Always Use Two
No matter what type of cabinet door you are looking to hang onto your cabinets, you will always need two cabinet door hinges. Unless the door is very heavy, two hinges are typically required. Cabinet door hinges are placed on the top and bottom of the side of the door.
Opposite Cabinet Door Pull
Cabinet door hinges are located on the opposite side of the cabinet door pull. Because of this you can easily open the door in a swinging motion without putting too much in the exertion. In double cabinet doors, placing the cabinet door hinges on the opposite side of the doors - even when there is a middle frame - will allow the doors to open wide without interfering with the other.
Hinge Measurement
The cabinet door hinges should be placed at least 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches from the top of the edge of the cabinet. Alignment with the edge of the cabinet will greatly depend on the type of hinge. They could be set flush with the edge of the cabinet face or in 1/4 inch from the edge.
Inlay Cabinet Door Hinges
One type of cabinet door hinges that require precise placement is the inlay type of cabinet door hinge. This hinge is placed within a cut out in the cabinet door that is made with a router or chisel. Placement is flush with the outside edge of the cabinet door with both hinges 2 inches from the top and bottom edge.
Consistent Placement
Placing cabinet door hinges in an entire kitchen requires consistency. Placing hinges randomly - without any type of constant measurement - will make the entire room look confusing and chaotic.
Use Straight Edge
The easiest way to place hinges in a consistent manner, and keep your cabinet doors straight, is to use a straight edge. Line the straight edge 1/4 inch from the edge of the cabinet door opening and mark the placement for the hinges 2 inches from the top and bottom. Using the straight edge will keep all your cabinet door hinges straight and consistent.

Cabinet Base Toe Kick Installation Basics
Adding a toe kick cabinet base will give your kitchen a professional and polished look. Most cabinet manufacturers will make matching toe kicks, but if they don’t, you can create your own pretty simply. Here’s what you need to know.
Measurements
You will need to get accurate measurements. You will need to know the length and the height available for the base toe kick. If your cabinet manufacturer makes them to match, then you only need the length measurements.
Cutting
The height of the toe kick should be cut 1/8 inch smaller than your original measurement. This will allow space for you to fit the piece in place. Make sure to get a clean cut on the butt ends in case you have to piece more than one together for longer cabinet areas.
Painting or Staining
Once you’ve gotten the toe kicks cut, you need to go ahead and stain or paint them to match the current cabinetry. It will be too difficult to try to do this after you’ve installed them, so just do it before hand to avoid any headaches.
Installation
Installing the toe kick is as easy as using countersink screws to attach the toe kick to the counter base. Use wood putty to fill in any holes left by the screws and touch up with paint or stain when you’re done.
Installing toe kicks is a very simple process. You will be pleased with the look you achieve after such an easy do it yourself project.

Bulid A Wall Cabinet For Your Microwave
Build an attractive wall cabinet for your microwave to not only give it a designated space, but to streamline the appearance of your kitchen. Building a cabinet requires some basic woodworking skill, but the project is easy with little patience and perseverance. Here's a basic guide to help you get started.
Things You Will Need
■Plywood
■1x2 lumber
■Variable speed drill
■Phillips head screw tip
■Drill bits
■Wood glue
■Wood clamps
■Finishing nails
■Hammer
■Measuring tape
■Cabinet Door Kit and Hardware
■Paint, Varnish or Lacquer
■Painting Tools
Step One - Measure for Your Cabinet
First, measure the area in which you want to place your new microwave cabinet. Measure for your desired height, width and depth of your microwave to determine how much lumber you need.
Step Two - Find a Design and Plans
Next, find a design that interests you, and work within the measurements of the space you have allocated for your cabinet. You can visit favorite hardware store or search for cabinet design plans on the Internet. Make sure to choose a design that includes instruction plans.
Step Three - Getting Your Lumber
Once you have your design, and the plans for that design, take the plans to your favorite hardware store or lumber mill and have wood cut into pieces as they are described in your cabinet plans.
Step Four - Putting It All Together
Once you have all of your lumber, and it has been cut to match the specifications of your design plans, you can then start assembling your cabinet. Use wood glue to join the edges of the boards together and secure the joints. Wipe off any excess glue to prevent staining or damage to the exterior surfaces of your cabinet. Follow the steps in your cabinet design plans, and clamp together large pieces to hold them in place while the glue dries.
Step Five - Hanging the Cabinet
At this point, the box shape of your cabinet should be complete, so you can attach the structure to the wall. Find and mark studs behind the drywall so you can screw into them with your wood screws.
Next, have someone help you place the cabinet against the wall. Use a level to make sure it is positioned correctly. Then, use 1½-inch wood screws to screw the cabinet box into the studs. Since it can be difficult to see where to place the screws, you can measure from a corner wall and mark the spot.
Step Six – Finishing Up
Follow the instructions that came with your kit to attach any hardware and hang the doors on the box. Then, finish the cabinet by using the paint, lacquer or varnish of your choice.

* Dowels
* Hinges
* Knobs
* Flathead Screws
* Finishing Nails
* Wood Putty
* Drawer Slides
* Measuring Tape
Step 1: Measure the Wood
Use a measuring tape to determine the dimensions of the area in which the cabinets will be installed. Transfer the measurements to the ½-inch plywood for assembly pieces. Use the table saw to cut the back, side, top and bottom pieces for the cabinets. Download a design template from any woodworking website or that may be available on a home improvement center website.
Step 2: Assemble the Cabinet
Frame the pieces of the cabinet in accordance with the design template. Nail the pieces together using finishing nails and glue for extra strength. Use the clamps to hold the frame together while the glue dries.
Step 3: Attach a Face Frame to the Cabinet
Drill holes to the attached sides of the frame. A face frame needs to be constructed, using the 1x6 lumber. The face frame is needed to attach the doors to the cabinets. Cut 4 pieces of 1 X 6 lumber per each cabinet that is being constructed.
Attach the 1x6 pieces to form a frame using the wood screws. Drill holes into the face frame and attach it to the cabinet frame with nails (pre-drilling holes will allow for the finishing nails to go in without splitting the plywood). Use the wood putty to cover the nail holes after nailing.
Step 4: Cut the Wood Doors
Cut the plywood to create doors for the cabinet frames. The cabinet doors should have a 1/4- to 3/8-inch overhang so that they can be opened easily. Use the table saw to cut the plywood. Sand the doors to make them smooth.
Step 5: Stain the Wood
Apply wood stain and a polyurethane finish to the doors and cabinet frame prior to attaching the doors to the cabinet. Allow the first coat of stain to dry before applying the second coat. As soon as the second coat dries, apply a coat of polyurethane finish to the cabinet. Let it sit overnight before moving the cabinets for installation.
Step 6: Install the Cabinets
After the cabinets have been allowed to dry completely, attach them to the studs where they are set to be placed. Use shims to and level to properly set the cabinets into place before screwing them into the studs. Attach the doors to the cabinets to complete the job.

Build Country Kitchen Cabinets
Creating country kitchen cabinets can usually be done inexpensively without replace your existing cabinets. You can achieve a country kitchen look with simple modifications like adding beadboard and with finishing techniques such as distressing the wood, adding stencil finishes and using stains.
Adding Beadboard
A great way to update your current look is to add some beadboard to a few of the cabinets. To do this remove the door from the hinges, cut away the center and install the beadboard. To hide the seams mount the beadboard to the back of the door. This will give your kitchen a great, customized look.
Distress the Cabinets
You can purchase craft supplies that will give the cabinets a distressed look without actually damaging the wood. Using a glaze around the trim work will create a distressed look. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can use a crackle finish to give it an even more distressed look. Crackle is a 3-part process involving a lot of painting and waiting. The look is worth the effort though.
Stencil Finishes
Getting some simple country-styled stencils and painting the cabinets can give your cabinets an updated country look. To add an even more country look you can paint with the stencils, then glaze over the cabinet after the stencil has dried. This will combine the distressed look with a more custom paint job and will certainly turn heads in your kitchen.
Using Stains
Many people feel stuck with their oak cabinets since they are one of the cheapest materials for cabinetry. You can get some great looks by using stains if you have plain old oak cabinets. You can use stains that are colorful, like sage greens or country blues. You can use a deep mahogany or cherry finish to give the cabinets a more elegant country look. The choices are endless.
Open Cabinet Designs
If you don’t mind a few of your cabinets having an open design you will have a great option for country cabinets. You can cut the center out of a few of your cabinets and install a lattice instead of a solid center. You can also use a more rustic slat board as well. You don’t need to have all your cabinets open, just a few will give you a great-looking kitchen.
Add Fabric Elements
If you are willing to do a little more work, you can create interchangeable fabric inlays for your cabinets. You will need to remove the center of the cabinet to achieve this. Once removed, you can upholster a piece of board to install in place. With this you can create a kitchy country look without a lot of money or effort. The other great thing with these designs is that you can change the fabric and the overall look of your kitchen at any point.

A Color Guide for Cabinet Door Hardware
Choosing your cabinet door hardware and the finish that will go on them is the most important process of redoing your kitchen cabinets. When people want to create a new look for their kitchen, the easiest way to do that is through the cabinet doors. Changing the finish, the hardware, the color, the style; it all adds up to a different look.
Matching it All
One of the problems that many people face when working with their cabinet restoration is figuring out how to match all the different colors. This means that everything must work together in order to create a seamless, and organized look. The pulls should match the hinges, while the hinges are also matching any latches or handles. Taking your time to match the colors, and styles you pick out of your restoration.
It is All in the Style
Think about the actual composition and style of your kitchen cabinets when choosing the finish. Raised panels, glass inserts, flat wooden doors, and recessed hardware all have a big part to play on the type of finish that is used. Wood cabinet doors are the most common type of cabinet, but there are also metal and plastic doors.
However, when thinking about finish it is important to realize what you are working with. Maple, oak, poplar, pine, cherry, and hickory are all different types of wooden doors. Different finishes will look much different on each one. The color you choose will be a big factor.
Color Matching for Cabinet Door Hardware
There are several different finished as well as styles of hardware. Stains, varnishes, veneers, paint, and glaze are all used for many different applications.
* Stainless Steel Hardware - Door pulls, latches, and hinges that are made from stainless steel should be paired up with a light paint, or light stain.
* Wrought Iron Hardware - A great touch for refinishing your cabinet doors is wrought iron hardware. When you are looking for an elegant look, use a dark stain with your hardware. A glaze finish will also work well when you are using this type of hardware.
* Bronze Hardware - When using bronze cabinet door hardware a light varnish, or stain will help this hardware stand out.
* Dark Pulls or Hardware - When you use a dark colored hardware, use aging techniques that will draw attention to the entire door instead of just a small portion of it. Glazing, distressing, or other antique techniques will pull the entire area together such as the molding, recesses, and other doors.
* Ceramic Hardware - Another popular form of cabinet door hardware is ceramic pulls. When using a ceramic type pull, very light colors are used. Yellows and whites look great with ceramic.
Color Matching for Consistency
If you have several different parts of your kitchen, you will still want to keep the same consistency in the look of your cabinets. For example, if you are suing ceramic hardware along the island cabinets, then using wrought iron above the countertop will look very choppy and keep things separated. Keep everything the same so that you can keep the entire color scheme in line with the hardware.

6 Steps for DIY Kitchen Cabinet Doors
If you just wish to replace your kitchen cabinet doors onto cupboard frames that are in good condition, you can be confident of your ability to do this task. Follow these guidelines to create and hang new, stylish and affordable kitchen cabinet doors that will make your kitchen function more effectively while looking great at the same time.
Choose the Type of Wood
You can choose to match the existing finish of the cabinets, or refinish the frames and cabinet walls before you put on the new doors. Solid wood doors in walnut, cherry or pecan are the most expensive, while oak doors will be in a mid-range budget. Cedar and poplar are good choices for inexpensive cabinet doors.
Select a Finish for the Doors
If you wish to paint the doors a solid color, the wood choice is not so important. For stains and varnishes, select a color as close as possible to the original cabinet framing. If you have the old doors, take one with you to the building supply center to match a stain or varnish. You will enhance the overall appearance of your kitchen by taking care with this selection process.
Decide on the Door's Surface Appearance
Decide whether you want a completely flat door surface, a flat frame, a raised frame with a square, rectangular, or curved profile.
Choose the Door Hardware
Once you know how your door will look, select appropriate hardware. For a country kitchen look, choose traditional hinges, handles and knobs with a black wrought-iron finish, or wooden knobs that you will either stain or paint black. Milk-glass knobs in white also work in a country kitchen. For a modern, contemporary kitchen look into the sleek, slender pull handles that sit well above the surface. Or eliminate hardware altogether and cut some finger-width pull-grooves into the base of each door at its opening edge. Plane and sand these well to avoid splinters. These doors look streamlined with concealed European hinges and magnetic closures.
Measure, Cut and Assemble the Doors
Use an old door as a template to cut the new doors. If you no longer have the old doors, measure carefully around the frame, allowing for ceiling clearance and overlay at the bottom. Remember the adage about measuring twice and cutting once. You don't want to spoil expensive wood with cutting wastage. Sand the door edges carefully and finish with a polyurethane sealant or varnish to prevent stains and chips.
Install the Doors
Measure the hinges so they are at least an inch above and below the cabinet's top and bottom shelf edges. Attach external hinges to the cabinet first and then to the door. Align the hinges and mounting brackets carefully when using European-style concealed hinges. Reverse the attachment process with this hinge type, attaching them to the door first and then the cabinet wall. Keep the hinge screws at moderate tightness until you check all alignments with the cabinet mounting.
You can be proud of the appearance of your kitchen cabinet doors by taking these steps to make them well. An upgraded kitchen also adds resale value to your home.

5 Types of Cabinet Door Hinges Explained
Many people do not think about the type of cabinet door hinges you will need when finishing a cabinet makeover, or a full kitchen remodel. While cabinets are the main focus of any type of remodel project, there should also be some attention paid to the hinges you use to attach the doors to the cabinet face. There are several different types of hinges available on the market today. Here is a listing of a few of the cabinet door hinges you are most likely to find.
Categories of Hinges
Depending on the type of cabinet frame you have, there are several different categories of cabinet door hinges. They can be hidden, showing, in-laid, or even wrap around. No matter what category of hinge you are looking at, they all have the same basic concept. Hinges all have four basic parts. They have two wings. The first wing is the cabinet side wing that attaches to the cabinet frame. The second wing is the door side wing that attaches to the cabinet door. There is also a knuckle in the middle of the two wings that attaches the two together. Inside this knuckle is a pin that makes it possible for the hinge to open and close.
Flush Hinges
Flush hinges are those that are inset into the cabinet. They are usually found on the inside of the cabinet door and sit in a rabbet that has been routered, or chiseled into the cabinet and door. The only part that is sticking out is the knuckle of the hinge. Some flush hinges also have the knuckle inset also.
Wrap Around Hinges
This type of cabinet door hinge will be on the outside of the cabinet. While they are on the outside of the cabinet door, they can also be inset. If the cabinet door and cabinet frame of the same thickness, you can easily inset the wrap around hinge. These hinges can also be bevel, and even a reverse hinge.
Side Hinge
This is probably the most common type of hinge available. These are of a basic structure and sit on the outside of the cabinet. This type of hinge can come in a lot of different styles and shapes, as well as materials. They are often decorative and alone can add a dramatic touch to your cabinet door.
Full Extension Hinge
When you open a cabinet door sometimes it is necessary to get a little more opening on the door. A lot of hinges, especially some inside type hinges, do not allow for full extension. This type of hinge will allow you to open the door in almost a 300 degree arc.
European Hinges
When you have an unframed cabinet, the best type of cabinet door hinge is called the European hinge. This type of hinge is entirely concealed within the wood on the inside of the door. Quite often, but not always, these types of hinges are also self closing. When the door is left slightly ajar, it will self close from the tension spring in the hinge.

How To Measure Kitchen Cabinets
The need to measure your kitchen cabinets may arise if you are looking to replace them or add additional accessories to your cabinets. Measuring your kitchen cabinets requires a measuring tape and a piece of paper to record the information.
Taking Cabinet Measurements
The upper cabinets should be measured for their length, width, and depth. To gather these measurements, run your measuring tape from right to left to record the width of the cabinet. Taking and up and down measurement will give you the cabinet’s length and finally open the door to the cabinet and run the tape measure to the back and front of the cabinet to obtain the depth.
Determine Measurements for Different Cabinet Units
The upper cabinets are more than likely the same size but it would not be a bad ideal testing this by measuring a different cabinet section. You should apply this same process to the bottom cabinets to obtain their measurements.
Record the Measurements
Record the length, width and depth measurements for each of the cabinets and place the information where it can be retrieved easily. A spreadsheet can be constructed for this purpose that can list each of the cabinets and their individual measurements.

Make Cabinet Doors
Changing the look of your kitchen can be as simple as finding out how to make cabinet doors. You can change the cabinet doors in your kitchen for a fresh new look that will cost you a fraction of the amount for new cabinets. These instructions are for frame and panel cabinet doors.
These doors include an exterior frame routed to hold a ¼ inch panel in the center. This style is fairly easy to make, but has a richer look than simple slab doors.
Materials Needed
* Hardwood in your desired variety – ¾ inch and ¼ inch plywood with hardwood surface
* Table saw
* Mitre box, mitre square
* Router on a router table
* Electric drill/screwdriver
* Corner fasteners
* Wood glue
* Stain and polyurethane finish
Step 1 - Choose Your Materials
The quality of the cabinet doors will depend on the wood that you choose to make them out of. Different types of wood will have different grain patterns. Choose a wood you like with as straight a grain as possible.
If you don’t have a planer and jointer, you will need to look for wood that is already surfaced on 4 sides (S4S), or you will need to ask if the lumberyard where you are buying your materials can finish wood for you.
Step 2 – Rip the Frame Pieces
The vertical sides of the frame are called stiles and the horizontal are called rails. You should rip your ¾ inch finished lumber to a 2 inch width for the frames, or whatever width you prefer. The 2 inch width leaves a noticeable frame and adds style to the doors, but without using too much wood.
Step 3 – Measure the Door Sizes
You’ll need to make the frames the size you want the finished doors. Sketch the kitchen and make note on the sketch of the size you’ll need each cabinet door. Write the measurement of each door beside its opening in the sketch.
Remember to leave 1/2 inch overlap on each side of the door. Therefore, when you measure the length of the stiles, add one inch (1/2 for each side) to the length of the stiles. Do the same for the rails.
Step 4 – Cut Frame Pieces to Length
Use the mitre square to square the boards. Set up the table saw to length and cut all the boards of the same length in succession to avoid resetting the saw each time.
Cut all the stiles first, then cut all the rails.
Step 5 – Make Router Cuts
On each of the rail pieces, you will use a coping bit on the router and a coping sled to make a coping cut on both ends of each rail. Do not use a coping cut on the stiles.
After all the rails are cut, use a stick bit to make a groove for the rails to attach to the stiles and create an attractive decorative cut along one of the edges of the stiles and the rails. Run the four pieces from each door through at the same time so the cut is on the inside edges.
Use the blocks to make sure the groove is in the right place for the tongue cut in the rails by the coping bit.
Step 6 - Cut Panel
Using the 1/4 inch plywood, cut the center panel for each door. Measure in 3 ¼ inch from the exterior size of the door to find the size for the interior panel.
Step 7 – Assemble the Doors
Use glue on the end of each rail. Insert into the stick bit groove. Hold in place with clamps. Insert the inner panel, but do not glue. Assemble the remaining stile and rail, using wood glue in each joint.
Step 8 – Finish
Using stain and polyurethane gloss, finish the doors to the color and gloss desired.

How to Make Cabinet Doors
In this article I will discuss some ways a person having the basic shop tools can build his own kitchen cabinet doors or China cabinet doors or even curio cabinet doors.
[diagram deleted] To start with, the easiest cabinet doors to make is a slab door made from plywood or MDF with the edges rounded over or profiled and a square pattern routered out in the center. When purchasing the plywood or MDF always buy a sheet that lies flat on the pile. This should give fewer problems with warping.
Similar to this style would be the same plain plywood or MDF with a small molding nailed and glued in the form of a pattern on the face of the door, such as shown on the left. Going a bit further, instead of routering a profile on the edge of the cabinet door, you could apply a small molding on the edge similar to applying square edging or tape. This is particularly useful to hide the grain of plywood. Keep the molding flush with the back of the cabinet door. I used this design with melamine, trimming it with oak molding. MDF, if painted, is an ideal material for cabinet doors since no grain appears on the edges. Be careful to include the thickness of molding in your measurements when cutting the cabinet door to size. The cabinet door should overlap the face frame or gable by about 1/2" to 5/8", depending on the hinges you have chosen.

How to Build Face Frame European Cabinets
In my previous article, I discussed how to build the frameless European kitchen cabinet
to add a Modern Home Décor. Now, lets talk about the companion to the frameless cabinet, the face frame cabinet. The cabinet with a frame around the doors is referred to in the trade as a face frame cabinet, since the frame is on the front face of the cabinet. The construction of the cabinets is the same in both designs, so I'll concentrate this article only on the face frame, door hinges and consequences of this design for drawer attachment pertaining to kitchen cabinets.

Frameless Kitchen Cabinets
Building a set of kitchen cabinets is a project that requires woodworking skills. Building kitchen cabinets is the ultimate test of a finish carpenter's skill. The cabinet builder should be well versed in taking and relaying accurate measurements, in the operation of shop tools, such as the table saw
, router and using a circular saw, both freehand and with a guide.
The design of kitchen cabinets depend on the hinges used. The old style kitchen cabinets, with a face frame, used the classic Amerock hinges mounted on the face frame. Some hinges inset into the cabinet door
giving a 3/8" thick overlap, others allowed the full thickness of the kitchen cabinet doors to overlap the frame. The concealed pin hinges were popular for awhile, making the cabinet doors flush with the frame. The doors were held shut with spring and roller catches. Finally, the magnetic catch emerged. Hinge design further evolved into a self-closing style, including artistic shapes and colors that forced everyone to re-do their kitchen cabinets. Our globe got smaller and European hinges came onto the marketplace. The design of these hinges revolutionized the kitchen cabinet industry. Frameless European kitchen cabinets were born. Cabinet doors could be easily adjusted three ways, drawers rolled easily on steel drawer slides, and there was no face frame to contend with.
The kitchen cabinet style today relies on the design and shape of the cabinet doors themselves rather than the framing of the doors and fancy hinges. Most doors were rather plain, one piece, made from solid core plywood instead of the veneer and multicore ply we have today. Their hinges were visible adding to the decor and ambiance. Today we see no hinges from the outside, no face frame, just the kitchen cabinet doors overlapping the sides of the modules they come in. Mass production has come to the kitchen cabinet industry. You can buy a set of kitchen cabinets in a box and assemble them yourself. In the old days carpenters used to come into a home and build the kitchen cabinets in place. Now a millwork shop will send out an estimator, measure your kitchen and design the cabinets to fit. They are still in modules, but fit your particular space, taste and budget.

Furniture Tips(5 REMOVING NAIL POLISH FROM A FINISH )
This can be a tricky one even for a professional. The only thing you can try is some 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper and a hard flat sanding block. Make sure you hold the block level while sanding the glue down flush. You will get into the surrounding finish, so try to keep it to a minimum. If the polish is pretty thick, you might mask around the spot to protect the area around it.
Once you get it sanded level, you will need to finish sanding the spot with 1200 grit paper.
To get the shine back on a high gloss finish, it will take some rubbing compounds and polishes on a cotton rag and some elbow grease Make sure you polish the entire surface so it all looks the same. Apply your favorite polish to finish it up.
If your table has a satin or dull sheen, grab a pad of OOOO Steel wool and some lemon oil or wool lube. Put some on the pad and rub the spot moving in the direction of the grain. Once the spot is gone, you may need to rub the rest of the table top so the sheen is even.
Make sure you go with the grain in long even strokes from one end to the other. To finish the task, simply wipe off the remaining oil and apply your favorite polish.

Furniture Tips(4 WHITE SPOTS FROM WATER )
This is the question I get asked the most. How do I remove the white rings and spots on my furniture. Given enough time, water can cause as much damage to wood as can fire. The first step in removing a fresh white spot or ring is simply to do nothing except remove the source of the moisture and any remaining on the woods surface. Then wait.
(Do not apply any furniture polish)
What the white ring consists of is water vapor trapped on the surface of the finish. In some instances, fresh white rings will disappear if given the time to be absorbed by dry air. High humidity will slow this process. A hair dryer will speed up the process, but set it on low and use discretion. Do not, however, presume that if a little heat is good, more heat is better-and reach for the heat gun. The white ring may disappear, but only because you melted the finish around it .
If the white ring refuses to leave on it's own, then you must try the following three suggestions.

If you have a glossy sheen, You may try using a little bit of white tooth paste on a dry cotton towel. If this leaves a glossier spot than the rest of the table, then you will need to get some rubbing compounds and polishes like you would use on a car's finish. If a mirror finish is not what you want, you can always adjust it down with the OOOO steel wool. Don't forget to use your favorite polish when your done.
Another simple remedy that sometimes works, is to spread some Vaseline on the damage and wipe it off after the spot is gone.
If none of these has worked, then the moisture has penetrated through the finish and is not repairable without refinishing.

Furniture Tips(3 PAINTING OVER EXISTING FINISH )
To paint over an existing finish, there are a few things to consider. One is the overall condition of the original finish. Most factory finishes are done in lacquer and older finishes tend to lose their plasticity and get hairline cracks running through it. If this has happened to your piece or you have bare or worn spots, it may be worthwhile to go ahead and strip the old finish off. Otherwise the cracks will show up in the finished project.
If your finish looks sound, Where you need to start is by removing all the hardware. Any parts that also come off, may make the job easier.
Grab some naphtha or mineral spirits and some clean cloth rags, and wipe the whole piece down once or twice. This will remove any furniture polish or body oils that may still be present. If there is any organic matter left on it, you may have to use a damp rag to remove it before moving on to the next step.
In order to provide the new finish tooth to adhere to, you will need to do some sanding with 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper. sand it until you have removed all traces of the original sheen. To get into some nooks and crevasses, a general purpose Maroon scotch-brite pad works well. Once you are done with the sanding, give it a good blowing off with compressed air (Wear your particle mask) or vacuum up the dust followed with a damp rag.
With all the prep work done, give it a final wipe down with naphtha and let it dry for at least 30 minutes prior to applying your first coat of paint. Make sure you doing it in a dry dust free environment if you can. A tack rag is a very important finishing tool. Oil based finishes are going to be the most compatible to the lacquer, and hold up the best. They do require a paint thinner for cleanup instead of water. Make sure you follow the instructions on the can.

Furniture Tips(2 HIDING LIGHT SCRATCHES )
One of the best way's I have found is using a padding lacquer. It really works well on household woodwork as well as furniture when you get a light colored scratch in the finish. You will need a soft cloth. Fold the corners until you can make a tight ball out of the center.
Apply the padding lacquer to the pad and tap it into the palm of your hand. (Gloves come in handy here). This will spread it through the pad. Lightly pad in the direction of the grain like it is an airplane coming in for a landing then taking off again. Don't over pad or come to a stopped landing. Let it dry for a couple minute's and reapply if needed until the scratch is melted back in. Usually one swipe is all it takes.
This will leave a high gloss finish if you keep padding, so you may have to pad the whole surface to make it all look the same.
Another way of removing light scratches is rubbing them out with polishing compounds. These are best used on high gloss sheens.

Furniture Tips(1 WAXY BUILD-UP )
When most people think they have a wax build up, most likely the culprit is a softened finish. Oil from your skin, food oils, and some detergents can break down a finish making it sticky, which in turn collects dirt and grime. If the problem lies on an area that is frequently touched.
To clean it, try using mineral spirits or naphtha as your cleaning agent. Using a soft rag or #0000 steel wool, this is good for getting rid of a waxy build up. A word of caution though, if your finish has softened all the way through to the wood, this process could leave you with bare wood.
If your finish has gotten that bad to start with, there isn't anything else you can do to reverse it other than stripping and refinishing anyway.

Installing Your Own RTA Kitchen Cabinets
One great advantage that RTA kitchen cabinets have is that they are very easy to assemble and install as compared to custom made cabinets. They are very helpful as they can save a huge amount of cash because the companies manufacturing them do not have to pay labor charges for assembling them. Usually RTA cabinets are of the same quality as custom made, but the only difference between them is that RTA cabinets have to be assembled at home while custom made ones are already assembled and then delivered to your homes.

Stainless Steel Cabinets: Never Reface Again!
If you already have a modern kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances, tile backsplashes, or maybe even a concrete countertop, your old-fashioned wood cabinetry may feel a little out of place. To maintain a sleek, industrial look that harmonizes with the rest of your style, you may want to replace your cupboards with something equally modern and chic: stainless steel cabinets. Whether it is appliances, countertops, or backsplashes, stainless steel never goes out of style. So why not complete that sharp, metallic look by installing some new high-gloss cabinetry.
Wood vs. Metal
There's nothing wrong with wood cabinetry. It comes in many shapes and styles; it can be painted and stained to any shade; and they look great when installed properly. But there are certain benefits that come with stainless steel cabinets. First off, they're durable. Think about why so many garages come equipped with upright, metal tool boxes: these storage devices can take a beating, look rugged and tough, and keep their contents safe and protected. The same can be said about stainless steel kitchen cabinets, which can stand some abuse yet still look good. Plus, since metal hardware (such as antique knobs and designer pulls) is in fashion, your new industrial cabinetry may already match other installations. Here are some other advantages
they have over wood cupboards:
No Refacing, Ever: You'll never have to reface, re-stain, or replace your door fronts, which cuts down on extra maintenance expenses and weekend chores.
Paint Problems: No longer will you have to worry about peeling paint. Since the kitchen can get pretty humid, this can be a common problem in wood cabinetry, whereas stainless steel cabinets always stand up to the moisture.
Wet Warp: Speaking of humidity, warping is a common problem amongst wooden cabinetry. Metal, of course, has no worries against the warp.
Easy Installation: Most metal cabinetry comes pre-assembled, which means that it comes as is and simply needs to be screwed into the wall.
Purchasing Stainless Steel Cabinets
There are some things you should be on the lookout for when buying your new stainless steel kitchen cabinets.
First, make sure that they open and close securely. When you shut the doors, make sure there is a solid, precise click: you don't want these bad boys swinging open on a whim.
Next, since kitchens are typically humid, there is a risk for rust, so make sure they've been galvanized or otherwise rust-proofed.
Then, check out their construction. Many times the material is cut by a laser and professionally welded. But make sure that everything is square, that there are no sharp edges (the corners should be hemmed and contain no gaps), and that no screws or other hardware is protruding once it is installed.
Maybe you want to customize. If so, brushed or textured material is great for avoiding fingerprints. Or maybe cut stylized holes in the door to create a unique design statement.
The Practical Pitfalls
Stainless steel kitchen cabinets are not perfect. Though they're tough and look great, you should be aware of some possible downfalls you may encounter.
One, they're expensive, and to install an entire system may cost thousands of dollars depending on the model, look, and quantity.
Second, they're obviously functional, but they tend to be a fashion decision as opposed to a practical addition. They may be noisy when it comes to pots and pans and they can echo when shut. And though they hold anything, food items and other cooking products can sometimes look a little out of place in a metal framework.
Third, in terms of style, they can feel a bit cold, so maybe switch things up a bit. Put on glass door fronts or plastic hardware to make them feel less uniform.
Fourth, they can be overwhelming. Since they take up so much room, they become a visual spotlight; therefore they don't match well with other materials. Usually they're installed to round out other stainless steel items in the room (drawers, counters, fridge).
Fifth, they require maintenance. Once in awhile you'll need to apply some special oil to keep up their sheen. And they could dent on occasion, so though this may add to their authentic appeals, they may also have to replaced, eventually.

Repainted Cabinets: A Smart Kitchen Update
Q: Our house was built in the 70s, and I'd really like to change the look of my kitchen. The cabinets, although in good, solid condition, look dark and dated. What are my options?
A: Your problem is a common one. Many people today are opting for a lighter look in their kitchens. The most expensive choice would be to replace the cabinets completely. Another option would be to reface the cabinets. This involves applying a new wood veneer to the cabinet bases and installing new doors and drawers. You can also keep the wood look by having the cabinets stripped, bleached and refinished (a messy and expensive process with sometimes disappointing results). Your other option would be to paint the cabinets, which can be the most cost-effective of all, offering the best return on your investment.
Q: Can I do it myself?
A: While many painting jobs can be done by homeowners, it's recommended that cabinet work be done professionally for the best results. The cabinets should be sprayed whenever possible, resulting in the best finish possible.
Q: What is involved?
A: While each kitchen needs to be evaluated individually, the process generally would be done in these steps:
All cabinets are washed with TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) if needed, to remove any grease or dirt build-up.
All doors, hardware and hinges are removed (in most cases).
Countertops and appliances are completely masked off. The floor is covered and the room is sealed with plastic to prevent dust or paint from spreading to the rest of the house.
Cabinets are thoroughly sanded and dusted. Dents and scratches are repaired.
A primer coat is sprayed on the cabinets and they are sanded and dusted.
A split-coat of a mix of primer and finish enamel is next, followed by more sanding and dusting.
A final coat of enamel is applied to the cabinet bases. An additional fourth coat may be applied to doors and drawers, as these areas have more wear and tear.
Q: Do I have to empty everything out of the cabinets?
A: If you want to have the inside painted, yes, they would have to be emptied. Otherwise, you can leave everything inside and the interior of the cabinets can be sealed off with plastic, or the cabinet bases can be painted by hand, with the doors painted separately.
Q: What kind of paint should be used?
A: Oil and acrylic primers and enamels, high quality products, are best for this type of work. They have a hard finish that resists chips and dents. In some cases, solid-colored lacquers may be used, especially if the cabinets are brand new.
Q: How long will it take to complete the work?
A: A small to medium kitchen will take about three days. Larger jobs will take from three to five days. If you have other dark wood work in your home – bathroom vanities, doors, casings, base, etc. These can be painted at the same time as your cabinets, giving the whole house a new look.
Q: How long will the paint job last?
A: If the above process is followed, the paint job should last for many years, probably longer than the finish you currently have. Of course, this will depend on the amount of traffic that goes through the kitchen. Just as the painted wood work and doors in your home need periodic painting, so the kitchen cabinets will also need maintenance. An advantage to painted cabinets is that any nicks or worn areas can easily be touched-up, thereby extending the life of the paint job.
Q: Do I have to paint them white?
A: Not at all! Cabinets in colors can be very exciting in the kitchen –: in Postal Blue, Parfait (a light peachy-pink), Whisper Gray and Sunny Yellow. Decorating magazines often show cabinets in Spruce Green, Navy Blue and weathered or faux finishes. One of the latest trends is to combine painting and staining in different areas of the same kitchen cabinets, or stain in two different colors. If you are not sure what color to select, your paint professional may offer color consultations, or you may want to get advice from an interior designer

Creative Cabinet Storage Solutions
Current home improvement trends are all about creative storage solutions and efficient use of extra space in our now smaller homes. It's also about keeping your family organized while juggling a busy schedule. The following ideas take simple storage cabinets and turn them into functional pieces of furniture designed to make your life a little easier. Most of these solutions utilize a cabinet with upper and lower cabinets and perhaps a shelf, but these could be modified to use a book shelf or pantry.
Snack Center: Instead of the kids running in from school, opening and closing the fridge and leaving a trail of open cupboard doors, they visit the snack cupboard. Different shelves are assigned different themes or functions, such as a shelf for lunch bags, bowl of fruit, or place to drop off homework. Open the bottom cabinet and have an array of healthy snacks ready to grab including jars of trail mix, granola bars, crackers, and juice boxes. Space permitting this would be the perfect spot to insert a small bar fridge for cold drinks and refrigerated treats.
Breakfast Station: This is where all the cereal is kept as well as extra spoons, cereal bowls and treats to add to the cereal such as dried fruit. Store the various brands in clear plastic containers that are easy for small children to get ahold of.
Baking Station: Imagine going to one place and finding everything you need to start a baking project. Have shelves filled with flour, sugar, baking powder, and other commonly used ingredients. Allocate a space for recipe books and another shelf for blender, food processor and mixer. Hang up your muffin pans and small measuring cups and spoons.
Place baking pans together and include a container for extra wooden spoons, spatulas and rolling pin. A handy corkboard attached to the inside of the door is perfect for displaying extra recipes and a shopping list.
Buy magnetic containers and hang on a metal bar for small ingredients such as sprinkles, coconut or extra bits of chocolate chips.
Bartending Station: This is your all-in-one bar to make serving your guests a breeze. Attach a shelf for highball glasses and underneath screw in slotted holders to hang all your stemware. On the door hang small utensils and corkscrew. Add x-shaped dividers or a small redi-made wine rack so you're never short that bottle of wine. Add a small wire rack for drink mixes, cherries and other garnishes, napkins and coasters. A larger wire rack or shelf is perfect for bottles of liquor and an ice bucket.
Craft Closet: Hobbies and craft projects are so much more enjoyable when you know exactly where everything is. With this craft closet, you'll be able to get your hands on all your supplies with little or no searching. Start by using large shelves for items such as a sewing machine or clear bins for holding smaller items. Hang a paper towel rack on the inside of the door to hold spools of ribbon. Taller spaces are perfect for rolls of wrapping paper. Get organizers for all your craft magazines and stand them up on a shelf. Fill a drawer with commonly used items such as scissors, tape, pens, pencils, and glue.

Custom Kitchen Cabinets: The Right Choice For You?
A kitchen should be a place that you enjoy being in. It is the place that determines to a large extent, the health of your family, because after all we are what we eat! If your kitchen is well built, well constructed, organized and orderly; designed not only with attention to mechanization and the mod cons but also due attention given to the aesthetics of the place, then it will be a joy to be in not only for the homemaker but for the entire family.
This is the reason that a lot of thought, care and attention should go into planning, modeling and designing your kitchen. Prefabricated kitchens could be a great option for many, for some of the more discerning individuals who are more particular about their requirements, the longevity and aesthetics of their kitchen, custom kitchen cabinets may be the better option. With custom cabinets you can choose the color scheme, the quality of material used and the way that the unit(s) fit into the kitchen.
A custom cabinet, which is made to fit the specifications and dimensions of your kitchen and not a thousand other kitchens will be more space effective, and a more exact fit for your kitchen. You cannot expect that a generic unit or stock cabinets that are made hoping that they will fit a bunch of assorted kitchens will fit as well in your kitchen as one that is made to order, keeping in mind the specifications and dimensions you require.
You have greater flexibility when you choose a custom cabinet, in terms of design as well as storage. When you decide to go with custom kitchen cabinets, you can be sure that there is optimal utilization of space and no waste of any nooks and crannies, which can sometimes turn into an eye sore.
Quality is another issue that is addressed by custom kitchen cabinets. With stock or mass produced cabinets, you really have very little control over the materials that are used to make the cabinets. Sure you can choose what you want and pick the material of choice but the design and material that meet your requisite criteria may not be available. You can choose from among materials like steel, wood, reclaimed wood, plastic etc. it all depends on your preferences with regard to color and design and also with regard to your beliefs. For instance you can choose the most environment friendly option, if you are an ecology conscious soul who would like to minimize his or her carbon imprint as well as burden on the ecology.
There is also the question of warranty, which a good quality customized cabinet will come with. It is a reassuring thing not to have to worry about repairs required or manufacturing faults and problems, since a reputed custom cabinet maker will make sure that you have no such complaints, and when you do, they are taken care of.

Finding Affordable Kitchen Cabinets
The cost of kitchen cabinetry is a major part of your remodeling budget. Cabinet prices vary largely, and many of these variations in price are due to factors that are not immediately apparent to the homeowner, making it difficult to understand why certain cabinets are priced higher and still may not be of a high quality. Here some things to look for when picking out quality cabinets for your new kitchen.
The type of material used in kitchen cabinetry eats up a big chunk of your total cost. The lower quality cabinets are made from pressboard or particleboard. This is less expensive, but also less durable. Joints will eventually loosen and become weak over time, especially with heavy use. It is also susceptible to water damage and can almost disintegrate when exposed to a minor water leak. Mid-range and high-quality (and the most common) cabinets are made of plywood. Plywood is a strong and solid wood product. Doors and drawer fronts to these cabinets can be made either from banded plywood or natural hardwood.
If you are using wood, the type you choose will affect your cost. Maple is a quality wood, and is moderately priced. Oak or cherry woods will cost more. The exotic woods will cost considerably more, but can give your kitchen an exquisite, beautiful look.
You also have to think about hardware. The hardware you choose will include the pulls and handles, as well as the door hinges and drawer slides. Hinges and drawer slides can be relatively cheap, or as expensive as $30 or more for top of the line products. Lower priced hardware is less sturdy and made with less precise manufacturing processes. If you use the cheapest hardware, you can bet that your doors will eventually sag and your drawers will begin to stick over time. The higher priced hardware will give you far better performance for many years to come.
They type of finish you use on your cabinets will also affect your total cost. If you will be painting the cabinets, you can use a less expensive wood, since you'll be covering up the color and grain of the wood. However, if you are using an expensive wood, using a stain will bring out the natural beauty of the wood and give your kitchen a classic look and feel. Painting is usually less expensive than stain, but painting can also be expensive, especially when doing any faux-finishes or antiquing techniques.
You'll want to take into account whether you want your kitchen cabinets to be custom made or ready-made. Custom built cabinets will, no doubt, be more expensive, but you can be sure that they have been built to fit into the uniqueness of your kitchen. Ready made cabinets may not fit perfectly, especially if you have an oddly shaped kitchen.
Keep the above factors in mind when deciding on your new kitchen cabinets. You'll be able to find the perfect cabinets for you kitchen if you research all the options available to you.
