Have you noticed that one of the most common and useful pieces of furniture in today's home is an office file cabinet? It may be used as a decorator piece, an actual filing cabinet or just plain storage cabinet but never the less it is in most all homes. If it falls to your responsibility to make the choice of what kind it behooves you to remember they come in many shapes, colors, quality and are manufactured from various materials. The right choice will fit into the decor and look beautiful, the wrong choice will look out of place and detract so you will want to be sure to choose wisely.
We generally think of two major types when we are considering a new or replacement purchase, vertical or lateral. Vertical is the old standby that is simply one drawer on top of another, usually 2 drawer on up to 5 drawer. Lateral is considered a newer more modern type that stretches from side to side and allows the files to stand on edge from left to right. Some lateral units may also stretch upward and be considered as having more than one drawer. You will want to be sure of the size because some will accommodate only letter size while others may handle legal and letter. And still others may be of the hanging folder type. Don't get back to the office with the wrong size.
One of the most purchased styles is the single drawer home office file cabinet. Some will believe it is the more function size but you will want to take a close look at the 2 drawer styles. Remember the most important part may be the height because it may need to fit under something or you may want to place something decorative on top.
If you have some security concerns you may want to look for a dual purpose combination safe and file cabinet. There are many styles available and you will not have any trouble finding just the right one so don't be talked into accepting the first one you see.
Will your unit be placed in one place never to be moved again? This may be an especially important question for the combination units because of their weight. Mobility or the ability to be able to move the cabinet around from place to place may come into play. You will be able to find them with small caster wheels all the way up to very large or invisible recessed wheels, the flexibility you desire is there for you.
Be sure to consider what material it is manufactured from as you make your final decision. Metal or steel may be the most readily available but today's home office file cabinet may be had in wood or plastic. These newer materials may also give you a more desirable or different finish, don't overlook their availability and compare prices.
Save yourself some time and do most of your research before you go looking because there are way too many styles, designs, models, colors and other variations when you get to the showroom floor. You may spend an entire day just looking and leave without anything. Best to try and know pretty well what you want before hand.
