An oak file cabinet has many advantages. A major advantage is that genuine, solid oak can be easily stained to meet your individual preferences. Oak file cabinets are also very strong and durable, and with proper maintenance, they can stand a lifetime. Stains are often used to preserve oak cabinets, however, they also enhance the color and grains of oak wood. Oak file cabinets are ideal for staining because the natural shade of oak allows for either very dark stains or very light stains.
Before you start staining your oak file cabinet, sand the unit first. Sand first with a course sandpaper and then gradually going with finer sandpaper. Dampen the unit every now and then before sanding again to improve the eventual finish.
You should then ready your unit for staining. To this, apply a wood primer specifically made to enable the stain to grip the wood better without the air bubbles. You should allow this to dry thoroughly before staining (read the instructions indicated on the product).
Now you can use the stain on your oak file cabinet. Choose the stain of your choice, but preferably either red oak, white oak or light mahogany. However, darker oak stains would still look great if you're not really particular with the ''natural'' look. Use a piece of cloth, like an old shirt, to apply the stain to your cabinet. Just remember to avoid using polyester. You should apply a thin layer each time and make sure you take off any excess stain dripping off the surface. Reapply after the first layer has dried.
